Most of the traveler who visit Penang will definitely ask me bring them to the best Hokkien Mee in Penang, just because Penang has so many Hokkien Mee around I really has no Idea which is the best to bring to but now I think I got a clue where to bring them, a place that serve great Hokkien Mee with air conditioning, “Tua Wa Kong” aka Big Bowl which situated at 8 Row serving only Hokkien Mee and they are specialist is making dry Hokkien Mee. One big bowl of great taste Hokkien Mee.
Tua Wa Kong practice modern style of self-order system where customer walk in and place their order themselves. Immediately after walk into the restaurant on your left is the simple 1, 2, 3 step, first you choose to either dry or soup then prawn or meat follow by choosing one of the four different type of egg. Just that simple.
We are lucky to meet up with Mike for a quick interview. Mike is a very friendly photographer (Wait, why photographer?), actually Mike himself is a professional photographer but he got the passion on food and has good experience on cooking, Mike participate in Maggi Mee My Way before and he has won himself two award for his creative dish. He share with us that his mom is good in cooking Hokkien Mee and that the reason Mike open up this shop to share his mom recipe to everyone and that how Tua Wa Kong was born.
Dry Hokkien Mee with boiled egg and braised pork meat RM8.50, immediately when it served to our table the strong smell is killing us, we know that is what we looking for. A bowl of Hokkien with strong taste and full of ingredients. Boiled Egg is something new and creative, we never came across any hawker putting in boiled egg into Hokkien Mee and surprisingly the combination work well, Braised Pork Meat aka Ru Rou also taste delicious and tender soft together with springy fish ball and vegetable. The soup itself is rich in flavor and I am not thirsty even drinking the whole bowl of soup, I particularly like the right amount of sweetness, spiciness and definitely the freshness of prawn.
Soup Hokkien Mee with marinated egg and braised pork meat RM8.50, basically they use the same stock but for those who like to has more soup then I would recommended you to try the soup version as it also taste pretty much the same as the dry version.
Next is my favorite, big curry prawn that served on my big bowl. Big fresh prawn is deep fried then marinated in curry sauce which taste awesome, fresh prawn has a very great springy texture and mild spiciness. Saw the small prawn at the side? Yes, that is the key ingredients and the most important items in Hokkien Mee. Some hawker slice it thin but here you got one whole piece of prawn which fully absorb the chili paste making it taste so delicious.
Tua Wa Kong serving one of the best Hokkien Mee I eat before, it has its own unique flavor and texture. Soup is rich in flavor and full of prawn taste while the side ingredients is as well very delicious, only thing I felt short of is the way they cook bee hoon and yellow noodle which is slightly overcook and too soft for me, it might be our fault also because we took long time to take photo, so I need to return and get another bowl to try it out.
