Zi Zai Restaurant located at Paya Terubong and this is the countless time i visit their restaurant, mainly served chu char and during Chinese New Year they offer Poon Choi as well. This round I going to try the long awaiting “Zi Zai Budae Jjigae” or we call it “不对锅”. Funny name isn’t it?
“Zi Zai Budae Jjigae” is actually not Korean style Budae Jjigae instead it more like their own creativity, the soup taste more spicy with a little bit of sourness and sweetness. Ingredients such as sausage, ham, clam, carrot, mushroom, tomato, chili…etc are all included. RM25 per person and pre-order is highly recommended.
Add on prawn on top of the steamboat.
Fresh big prawn are also included, other than that fish meat, scallop, slice pork are also inside of the package.
I really enjoy the soup, it is spicy at first but after add on all the ingredients and boiled for a while, sweetness pop out and create a well balanced taste.
Chung Ling Egg, another signature dish that can only be found in 3 places Chung Ling High School, 43 Cafe and Zi Zai Restaurant. Half cooked stir fried egg with chili oil, always the best in taste. Yummy.
Ah Ma Fried Chicken, nicely marinated chicken meat deep fried to perfection. The Chicken meat is so flavorful and juicy inside, it is one of the best deep fried chicken i ever try.
Zi Zai Restaurant located at Paya Terubong, you can easily spot the restaurant as it is the only Restaurant there and the rest are small factory, lot of parking space available during dinner time. We dine it a couple of time and just in love with their “mother flavor” dishes, a couple of famous dishes such as Asam Prawn, Curry Fish, Chung Ling Fried Egg…etc are something not to be miss. In the past Chinese New Year we order their Poon Choi for reunion dinner and truly satisfied with the generous amount of ingredients and balanced of taste.
We order small Poon Choi that is enough for 6 person and it cost RM338 each, promotion for PFH Group Member -10%. Collected the Poon Choi at their restaurant in the afternoon, the whole package is well packed with separate package for soup.
The Poon Choi come with metal bowl that can be heated directly from gas stove with the provided soup, the ingredients included are Prawn, Abalone, Fish Ball, Chicken, Duck, Mushroom, Sea Cucumber, Radish, Broccoli…etc. The soup taste pretty much like Char Ho Fun soup but sweeter and almost all other ingredients are marinated or cook before so it does has its own taste. All the ingredients mix well with each other, the taste is well balanced and we almost finish the whole bowl.
Lau Fu Zhi Bah Kut Teh 老夫子肉骨茶 located Jalan Paya Terubong which is just next to SJK Kong Min, they have another shop that is located at Data Keramat which always crowded and extremely hard to find parking space. In Paya Terubong at least you can park at the road side or right the road there is ample parking space. As usual, the best time to eat Bah Kut Teh is as late as possible, for sure before they closed. The longer it cook the better it taste.
Unlike other Bah Kut Teh shop in Penang who use clay pot, here they use just a bowl. Inside the bowl fill with pork intestine, pork ball, meat and fried bean curd sheet. The soup is so flavorful, it has very strong herbal taste and pork sweetness, it doesn’t has the thirsty feel even though we refill a few times.
A must Yap Cha Guai that goes perfectly well with Bah Kut Teh.
Crunchy vegetable top with meat floss and pork lard. Very generous amount of meat floss, I really like the crunchiness of fresh vegetable and sweet taste of meat floss.
We are venturing into Paya Terubong area for good food tonight and Zi Zai Restaurant is on top of our list since we know this restaurant is famous for its home cooked food. Tonight we going to try it signature Treasure Pot aka Poon Choi, can’t wait for it. The restaurant is located at Paya Terubong opposite Terubong Seafood (阿水海鮮茶餐室), simple restaurant without fancy decoration.
Treasure Pot RM418, served for 12 persons. We always call this as Poon Choi which has lot of luxury ingredients in it. The whole plate is extremely presentable with abalone on top and surrounded with prawn and vegetable, it not only what you can see instead inside it has whole lot other ingredients such as sea cucumber, chicken, duck, fish maw, yam, vegetable, pork…etc. Eating from top to the bottom each layer has it very own specialty and unique taste.
Big prawn served which slightly deep fried before putting into the big pot, it is extremely fresh and delicious.
Pork meat that has layer of fat and meat, it gave a good fragrance and smooth texture.
Big chunks of chicken and duck meat at the bottom of the pot, fully absorbing the gravy which gave a very strong flavor.
Mantis Shrimp Thermidor with Yaki Udon is a new dishes that is not in the menu yet, it very closed to baked cheese but inside it use Udon and Mantis Shrimp. Mantis Shrimp is not big enough hence hardly can get a bite on it, it would be good if they deep fried it before bake with cheese. No doubt there is creativity from chef on this dish.
Zi Zai Pork Knuckle RM20, very well cooked dishes which full of flavor and the tenderness of meat is just right.
Sauté Bacon with Preserved Egg Yolk and Bean Sprouts, it is very rare that Chinese chef use bacon in their dish but chef make good use of the bacon to make the simple stir fried bean sprouts to another level and create its own unique taste.
Uhaha RM12 is actually sambal prawn where the prawn is extremely springy and the sambal is very delicious.
Ulala RM12, stir fried clam with some chili which bring out great natural sweetness of clam, it has very rich flavor but slightly salty for my liking.
Korean Kimchi Claypot is another “not in menu” dish, trust me you will like this and it going to be on the menu very soon. Chef told us that since their objective is to offer affordable price hence this dish going to be half of the price you get from Korean restaurant like Daore. It taste a little bit spicy and sour which very appetizing, putting in the Korean noodle making it taste very good.
Kimchi Claypot best companion is definitely Korean instant noodle.
Q GARDEN STEAMBOAT & BBQ 正源火锅店 located at the Pine Valley new shop lot at Jalan Paya Terubong, offering steamboat and BBQ buffet for RM21.90 adult while children and senior citizen RM12.90. Q Garden has been there for quite some time and always crowded with people, that make us so keen to try it out since the price is reasonable.
The restaurant has very high ceiling and big air blower for good ventilation, we are not sweating even though no air con.
The steamboat and BBQ pot is very special, lower part is for steamboat while in the middle the hot gas steaming hot plate for grilling purpose, that is awesome design for double usage.
If you will to ask us how many ingredients provided I will answer you more than 100 ingredients, it just too much for us to count.
Almost all type of fish ball, meat, seafood, vegetable, noodle, rice…etc can be found here, they just put little bit on the shelf and top up frequently to maintain ingredient freshness.

The crab given is quite big as well, not like other shop that just small size.
Wrapping up with dessert, Jelly, Fresh Fruit and Ice Cream provided.
You can even make your own Rojak.
