Penang Gertak Sanggul Seafood Restaurant

We visited Gertak Sanggul Fishing Stage Seafood Restaurant sometime back and recently we hear there is another restaurant offer extremely fresh seafood so we decided to give it a try. We call the owner Evon and ask for reservation, she then ask us to order seafood upfront in order for them to prepare but……later you will know why.

The restaurant is located right opposite Gertak Sanggul Fishing Stage Seafood Restaurant. Driving into Jalan Gertak Sanggul, all the way in you will pass by KhunThai Seafood Restaurant and HaiBoey Seafood Restaurant, continue straight for another 10-15min then you will be in Gertak Sanggul, you will see a big red Telekom tower on your right that is Gertak Sanggul Fishing Stage Seafood Restaurant, on your left is the restaurant we going to visit today.

The restaurant is pretty small with just a few table available, it more like a family business. We are greeted by Evon and she start to arrange table for us and immediately start preparing our food. We are so surprised and start asking each other, do you told them what flavor and how to cook? No! No! then how they prepare? nobody know. Just a few minute later our food is served, prawn, shell, squid…etc. Now we know why they don’t ask, because every seafood has their own cooking method and it kind of fixed. Anyhow, we are more than happy for someone to decide that for us. Must be a reason for their bold move, freshness. They must be very confidence with their seafood only they dare to prepare everything simple. Well, let see.

Steamed Prawn RM50 , big fresh white prawn steamed in wine which has very mild wine flavor instead the soup is full of prawn sweetness. We found the prawn to be under cook, we do not know whether they purposely cook it that way to show freshness or what but it a little bit chewy but definitely can taste the sweetness and freshness.

Steamed Kapa RM12, Kapa is not so big in size but it is so fresh that we can truly taste the sweetness of the meat.

Deep Fried Squid  RM20, squid cut into small pieces then deep fried to golden color, very thin layer of flour being use but it still crispy and the squid is not chewy at all.

Steamed Grouper Fish RM60, it is the most expensive dish of the night but it also one of the best dish we had. We can taste the sweetness and smooth of grouper fish meat immediately, obviously it is not those farm grown type. It is steamed with soy sauce to bring out it original freshness and sweetness taste, we really enjoy the smooth texture of the fish meat.

Deep Fried Fish RM15, in hokkien we call “Ji Ya Hu” which is a type of small fish that famous for deep fried. There is more than 10 fishes in our plate and it only cost RM15, definitely a good price. The fish is perfectly deep fried to have a very crunchy texture but still maintain juicy meat in it.

Last but not least is our favorite Steamed Flower Crab RM45. We order 5 LIVE flowers crab. Yes, I bold LIVE because it is extremely hard to get LIVE flowers crab in market, but they got it here. Although it not super size but it has quite standard size with a lot of crab egg in it. Honestly, I have never try a crab that is so fresh and sweet before, it is so sweet and the meat in every leg is so full and firm, every bite you got to taste the crab sweetness and the mouthful of crab meat is just awesome.

Not only the seafood is awesome here but view also breathtaking, you can spend sometime to walk around the beach before dinner. Anyhow, we are glad to found another great seafood restaurant in Penang. Again, if you decided to dine there, please give a call to Evon.

Teluk Kumbar Hao You Seafood Restaurant

It been quite some time since our last visit to Teluk Kumbar Hao You Seafood Restaurant, Teluk Kumbar area full with seafood restaurant such as Teluk Kumbar Hao You Seafood Restaurant, Hai Boey Seafood Restaurant and Khuntai Thai Seafood Restaurant. Teluk KumBar Hao You Seafood Restaurant is the first seafood restaurant you arrive if you coming from Airport direction, the restaurant hide behind an abandoned old house. The restaurant is located beside sea side and the best thing about this restaurant is the sitting area is actually on top of the sea sand, it is extremely natural.

Satay is a must ordered, the chicken satay perfectly marinated and cook to perfection. Satay is full of flavor with much flavor on the sweet side while a little bit sautéed taste.

Kam Heong Lala slightly lack of Kam Heong flavor, slightly more dry shrimp and Kam Heong paste will definitely make this dish much better.

Tom Yam Fish, one whole fish cook in Tom Yam soup, fish is fresh and sweet while the tom yam spicy and sour taste is rich in flavor. The acidity of Tom Yam soup help to boost up the freshness and sweetness of fish meat. Tom Yam soup is best to eat with steamed rice.

Deep Fried Squid is very crispy and the squid is very soft, it doesn’t has the chewy texture instead it can be bite off.

Salted Egg Crab, fresh crab stir fried with salted egg. Sadly the crab is not as big as I was hoping for but luckily it was fresh, the salted egg coated the crab shell with sweet and sautéed taste.

Seafood Steamboat at Bayu Bay Seafood

Miss the charcoal hot steamboat that I had during Chinese New Year in my childhood and the culture is no longer there since nowadays everyone is using electrical steamboat, the only restaurant that still using charcoal is Goh Huat Seng and Zhi Wei Yuan. Lately we are just crazy for steamboat and with that you should expect few other steamboat review publish soon.

We bought Online Voucher for RM52, according to the coupon that it enough for 6-8 persons but for big eater like me that is definitely not enough.

Bayu Bay Seafood restaurant is located at Teluk Kumbar and it very hidden inside Sungai Batu, it well located at sea side and awesome sunset view during our visit.


One Jug of Keat La Sui Bui

Steamboat ingredients such as abalone slice, fish meat, prawn, fish maw and chicken meat, portion is definitely not enough for 6 person as it pretty small. Fish meat use is grouper fish and the prawn is big and fresh.

Another plate of ingredients such as tofu, fish ball, yam, mushroom and vegetable.

We ordered additional plate of ingredients such as squid ball, crab stick and vegetable as the package portion is too small.

The steamboat soup is milky color and taste good, it is precook with fish bone and vegetable that make the soup sweetness.

It boiled, ready to heal our hungry stomach.

One of the super big prawn, it taste so fresh and delicious.

Overall the steamboat soup and ingredients taste good but the service is pretty slow.

Khuntai Authentic Thai Cuisine Resturant at Teluk Kumbar

Penang Kia is so lucky as we no longer need to travel far from island to mainland for the spicy and hot Thai food serve in Khuntai restaurant. We visited Khuntai restaurant in year 2010 with review here . Khuntai is now located at Teluk Kumbar which well between the two famous restaurant Hai Boey Seafood and Hao You Seafood, it going to be a great battle between the 3 big restaurant.

Teluk Kumbar Khuntai is a big restaurant with indoor and outdoor sitting areas together with big parking lot. Khuntai has great experience in serving authentic Thai cuisine, their experience earn them good reputation and grow their business to a total of 4 restaurant now, 2 in Penang and 2 in Petaling Jaya.

Tom Yam Seafood RM20, Tom Yam is a spicy and sour soup typical in Thailand but due to it tastiness it has blended well into Malaysian cuisine and become one of the popular food in Malaysia now, Tom Yam soup made with ingredients such as lemon glass, tomato, herb, onion…etc to create a very rich flavor, seafood such as fish meat, squid and prawn is best companion to go along with the spicy and sour soup. Lemon Steamed Lala RM12, Garlic and Lemon is the main ingredient use to cook with Lala to create a sour yet slight spicy flavor soup, the present of lemon juice making it taste very good while the freshness of Lala bring it tastiness to another level.

Deep Fried Fish with Ginger Soy Sauce RM44.20, fish is perfectly deep fried to give a crunchy texture while the soy sauce sautéed the fish making it delicious together with the ginger.

Stir Fried Kailan RM8 additional RM1 add on for salted fish but that is wrong decision as the salted fish has strong fishy smell making the overall dish has fishy smell.
