Best Seafood Restaurant in Kota Kinabalu Sabah

Here is the summary of our seafood hunting during our visit to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. Sabah popular for it seafood variety and freshness and our trip to Sabah prove that, lot of seafood you can’t find in Penang but you can easily get it in Sabah seafood restaurant. Price is not really cheap as compare to Penang except few items which is dirt cheap such as small crab but big crab still very pricey. Understand from local people they normally go further from town to enjoy seafood for much fresh seafood at cheaper price but since we are tourist hence we just go for somewhere nearby, hoping AirAsia got cheap promotion price to allow us visit Sabah again so that we can hunt for more seafood.

Back to our seafood hunting mission, we went to four different seafood restaurants which all located just walking distance from our Hotel Cititel Express, below are listed review of each restaurant.

Talking about food quality and price, we recommend “Welcome Seafood Restaurant” as it has the cheapest price among the restaurant and their food quality is the best but their seafood variety is not that much compare to other restaurant. If you are looking for environment then “Port View Restaurant” will be your choice as you have to pay premium price, else if you looking for huge variety of seafood then please proceed to Sedco Square as there has few restaurants that has lot of fish tank with different seafood in it, ranging from crab, prawn, fish, clam to abalone. We recommend Hua Hing in Sedco Square as our experience tell that their food is good and price is reasonable.

Hope that our review for various seafood restaurant in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah do help to proper plan your trip for seafood hunting. Good Luck!

Most Expensive Fish SuMei at Port View Restaurant

Wrapping up our trip in KK in one of the premium restaurant Port View Restaurant and today we going to try what we been waiting for, the famous Su Mei fish. One of the very rare fish that you can only get in Sabah as far as I know, you can see it swim in the tank with price tag of RM380 per kg, WAU! Yes, we are WAU! as well but since we came so far definitely we have to try it.

Steamed White Clam RM30, white clam steamed with glass noodle and garlic, the portion is pretty small but the combination of garlic and glass noodle make perfection.

Fried “Tea Won Miao” with Belacan Sauce RM20, I just hate the sticky texture of this vegetable, it just doesn’t taste good.
Stir Fried Vegetable

Cheese Baked Oyster RM36 (RM9 each), since we do not have good oyster in Hua Hing hence we must try it here, the oyster here is bigger and the meat is much more fresh and bigger, baking with cheese is so delicious.

Steamed Parrot Fish aka SuMei RM304, RM380 per kg. What we should we expect? how does it taste? What is it texture? Blah blah blah and lot of question just cross my mind, long awaiting SuMei is finally served on table. The SuMei meat is not something very extraordinary, it texture smooth and soft but not very significant, doesn’t it value for the dollar paid? NO! it just overprice and I can say that stone fish taste much better.

Since we staying at Cititel Express and the nearest restaurant is Sedco Square hence we went back to Hua Hing Seafood Restaurant for another of seafood dinner, this time we try more dishes and more fishes as well.

Dry Curry Beef RM20, very strong curry powder taste and the curry beef is delicious and not chewy.

Snow Hill Oyster RM8 each, huge disappointment with the oyster, oyster shell is so big but the oyster inside is extremely small and it doesn’t taste fresh either, RM8 just not worth the value.

Signature Steam Fish RM56, the fish meat is very smooth and soft while the soy sauce has very strong flavor.
 Signature Steam Fish

Steam Stone Fish RM80, a fish that most of the people will not ordered but that is what attracted me, since the stone fish has very less movement and just stood on the floor most of the time hence the meat must be very special, with that in mind I decided to give it a try, it is very expensive as well, a small fish cost us RM80.
We have no regret ordered this fish as the meat is the most smooth and soft I ever had before, simple soy sauce steamed is good enough to bring the sweetness out from it.
If you notice the bone is light blue color, it like glow in the dark, we even keep one to try it at dark place but it never glow…haha!
